Garment Measurement Spec Sheet: How to Write POMs and Tolerances A garment measurement spec sheet gives a factory a measurable definition of fit. It tells the sample room where to measure, what each size should measure and how much deviation is acceptable. Without it, a factory may produce a garment that looks close to the sketch but fits differently from the intended style. This guide focuses on the working details: points of measure (POMs), finished garment measurements, size grading and tolerances. ## Start with finished garment measurements Your spec sheet should normally state **finished garment measurements**, not body measurements. Finished measurements describe the garment after sewing and finishing, laid flat or measured as specified. For example, a wearer with a 90 cm chest does not necessarily wear a garment with a 90 cm chest. Ease—the difference between body size and garment size—changes depending on silhouette, fabric stretch and intended fit. Before filling the size grid, decide: - Is the style slim, regular, relaxed or oversized? - Is the fabric woven, knit or stretch? - Which base size is being fitted first? - Are the measurements taken flat, around the body, or on a stretched garment? Write those conditions into the spec sheet notes so the sample room reads the numbers in the correct context. ## What is a point of measure (POM)? A point of measure is a named and numbered location on a garment where a measurement is taken. POMs remove ambiguity. “Chest” is not enough; “half chest, 2.5 cm below armhole, measured flat” is repeatable. Each POM should have: 1. A unique number or code. 2. A clear name. 3. It ensures the same POM is measured the same way by the brand, pattern maker, sample room and QC team. ## Build a practical size grid Place POMs in rows and sizes in columns. Add a tolerance column at the end. For a first sample, you may only need the base size. Centimetres are common in global apparel production; inches can be used if the factory and brand agree. Avoid mixing them in the same grid unless the conversion is clearly managed. ## How to choose garment tolerances Tolerance is the acceptable variation between the spec and the measured sample or bulk garment. It is not a target. A tolerance of ±1 cm on a 54 cm half-chest means a result between 53 cm and 55 cm may be acceptable, provided the garment also meets the agreed construction and appearance standard. Choose tighter tolerances for small or high-impact measurements, such as collar opening or pocket placement. Broader tolerances may be needed for large dimensions, washed garments, stretch fabrics or handmade processes. Do not copy a generic tolerance table without considering the style. Ask the factory which measurements are difficult to control and agree on the exceptions before bulk production. ## Keep measurement method and sample stage visible A spec sheet is clearer when it shows the sample stage and condition: - Proto sample: confirm silhouette and construction. - Fit sample: confirm base-size measurements and ease. - Size set: review graded sizes. - Pre-production sample: confirm approved materials and final specifications. Add a column for “found measurement” when reviewing a sample. Label the type of measurement and add a fit note. ### Naming a POM without a method “Sleeve length” can be measured from several starting points. Use a diagram and a full description. ### Forgetting tolerances Without a tolerance, every minor variance becomes a negotiation.
